TANQIA is the first privately owned wastewater utility in the UAE. Its structure is based on the concept of Private-Public- Partnership (PPP). Its greenfield Wastewater System was constructed in two Phases. Phase I covered the Wastewater Treatment Plant of 16,000 m3/day; and Phase II covered 170 kilometers of Wastewater Collection Network; and 30 pumping stations. Phases I&II connected 5,231 properties.
On 31st December 2017, the Network reached 440 kilometers connected to 6,800 Properties that cover 81% of the population of the Concession Area of 109square kilometers encompassing the City of Fujairah, Qurayya and Mirbah and all population hamlets in between them. Construction of the first expansion of the installed treatment capacity of the Plant from 16,000 m3/day to Plant to 48,000 m3/d is currently underway.
Since commencement of commercial Operations in 2008, TANQIA has produced 11.5 billion gallons of tertiary treated Effluent that is tertiary fully compliant with the standards set by the Government of Fujairah which is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 7% for FYs 2018-2037.
The recent Government policy calls for maximization of use of complying Effluent as a substitute for higher value desalinated and underground water. This substitution would reduce investments in desalination and preserve the depletion of underground water.
